Dr. Rui Avelar is an accomplished sports doctor-turned-entrepreneur who has a great degree of experience in both medicine and the biotech industry. His professional career can be traced back to Canada, where he studied as a medical student at the University of Toronto. After obtaining his medical degree, Rui went on and ran his own sports medicine clinic, in addition to working as the team physician for the NHL team Vancouver Canucks. During the same time, Rui served as the chief medical officer at Angiotech Pharmaceuticals, Inc, where he oversaw the clinical operations, regulatory, and medical affairs and quality divisions. Before long, Rui relocated from Canada to southern California, where he has since been involved in several other pharmaceutical companies. After moving to Orange County, he has held the position of chief medical officer at Allergan and, currently, Evolus Inc. His most recent project has been the development of Jeuveau, a Type A botulinum toxin and a direct competitor to Botox Cosmetic. From getting FDA approval to the successful development of the drug, Rui has gained a vast amount of experience in both the scientific and business aspects of biotechnology. He is eager to share his personal journey in this seminar, as well as to give his thoughts and opinions on the many ventures he has been involved in.
