Eduardo Marbán, MD, PhD, is a pioneering physician-scientist whose key discoveries in gene- and cell-based therapies have formed the basis for three startup companies. Marbán completed an MD/PhD program at Yale University, then went to Johns Hopkins as an intern and rose through the ranks to become Chief of Cardiology. In 2007, Dr. Marbán moved to Los Angeles as founding director of the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, guiding it from #17 in the country to #3 (and #1 in the western USA) among heart programs, as ranked by USNWR. In his research, Marbán created the first biological pacemaker as an alternative to electronic pacemakers. Since 2004 his work has led to 10 clinical trials of cell therapy, most recently for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Marbán’s lab now focuses on the development of next-generation cell-free therapeutic products, including genetically-engineered exosomes. Among the many honors Dr. Marbán has received are the Basic Research Prize of the American Heart Association (AHA), the Research Achievement Award of the International Society for Heart Research, and the Distinguished Scientist Awards of the AHA and the American College of Cardiology. In addition to the groundbreaking work being conducted at the Smidt Heart Institute, Dr. Marbán will also share his personal journey and experience running a high-profile research lab for graduate students aspiring to follow in a related career path.
